CBG is one of many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, often referred to as the "mother cannabinoid" due to its role as a precursor to other cannabinoids like THC and CBD. Unlike THC, CBG is non-psychoactive, meaning it doesn't produce the euphoric "high" associated with cannabis use. Instead, it offers potential therapeutic benefits without the mind-altering effects. Endocannibinoid receptors are found throughout the human body and our bodies produce its own cannibinoids which bind to these receptors.
Endocannabinoids are molecules produced naturally by the human body that interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex network of receptors and enzymes involved in regulating various physiological processes. These molecules play crucial roles in maintaining homeostasis, or balance, within the body.
As we age, there is evidence to suggest that the production of endocannabinoids declines. Several factors contribute to this decline:
1. Changes in Metabolism: With age, the body's metabolic processes undergo changes, including alterations in lipid metabolism, which can impact the synthesis and breakdown of endocannabinoids.
2. Decline in Receptor Sensitivity: Endocannabinoids exert their effects by binding to cannabinoid receptors, primarily CB1 and CB2 receptors. Studies have shown that the density and sensitivity of these receptors may decrease with age, leading to diminished responsiveness to endocannabinoids.
3. Dysregulation of Enzymes: Enzymes responsible for synthesizing and degrading endocannabinoids, such as fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) and monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL), may become dysregulated with age. This dysregulation can disrupt the balance of endocannabinoid levels in the body.
4. Oxidative Stress and Inflammation: Aging is associated with increased oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, which can negatively impact the ECS. Oxidative stress can impair the function of ECS enzymes, while inflammation may alter endocannabinoid receptor expression and signaling.
Consequences of Reduced Endocannabinoid Levels:
The decline in endocannabinoid production with age may have significant implications for overall health and wellness. Since the ECS plays a vital role in regulating numerous physiological processes, including mood, appetite, pain perception, immune function, and neuroprotection, dysregulation of this system can contribute to age-related conditions and diseases.
Glaucoma is a progressive eye condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure (IOP), which can lead to optic nerve damage and vision loss if left untreated. While traditional treatments such as eye drops and surgeries exist to manage glaucoma, researchers are exploring alternative therapies, including cannabinoids like cannabigerol (CBG) found in cannabis plants. Research suggests that CBG may have ocular hypotensive properties, meaning it could help lower intraocular pressure. A study published in the Journal of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics found that CBG, when applied directly to the eyes of mice, effectively reduced intraocular pressure
After my diagnosis I was able to purchase a used air-puff tonometer and begin my own characterization of my intraocular pressure (IOP). Over weeks I measured both eyes at various times of the day from waking until bedtime and after certain daily and routine activities. Here were my results:
Without the use of CBG my IOP would decrease at a slower rate throughout the day with a higher low and many higher highs.
With CBG, as soon as I awaken my IOP drops 7 mm Hg over the the first 15 minutes. This is in line with some studies which feature normal eyes. Note that there are fewer readings above the yellow line (which is the maximum range). Note that the average line is at a lower slope but starts at a much lower reading. This means overall my pressures are lower with the CBG oil.
Don't put this stuff in your eyes. Measure out your dosage and squirt it under your tongue and hold it there for as long as possible, then swallow it. There shouldn't be much taste. Although the lab tests on mice with CBG are placed directly in their eyes, this introduces other risks like infections etc especially because it's not made to be dropped in the eye.
I started on CBG oil with one drop, held under my tongue for as long as possible, usually after I brush my teeth. (I hold under the tongue for 10-15 minutes sometimes and swish around my gums for max absorption). The CBG oil I use has no taste. Every day I would increase by one drop. After a week of no adverse effects, I increased the dosage to see if I could get to optimal. But if you've never tried CBG oil, it's best to start slow.
I have discovered that for me, my optimum dosage is 0.07 mg / lb of body weight. I'm 191 lbs, so 0.07 mg/lb * 191 lbs = 13.37 mg. I give about the same dosage (adjusted to her weight) to my mother, who gets other benefits (better sleep, better blood pressure and massively reduced inflammation in her right foot). Your dosage may vary depending on your biology so start slow and ramp up the dosage as you are more comfortable.
I've taken 30mg in a 24 hour period and felt no side effects. The one side effect is that my left and right eye will have a large difference in eye pressure, indicating overconsumption. The second indication that I've taken too much is that my eyes will tend to cross, and focusing on my laptop, or points of light (small led light on the TV for instance) become a double image and isn't as easy to focus my eyes on as a single image. When this happens I back off the dosage until I reach the sweet spot.
This is the CBG oil I started with and still use today. It is pure CBG isolate in MCT coconut oil. Shake well before each use and place in refrigerator after opening. Mellow publishes their 3rd party lab results on their website and all cannibis producers are regulated by Health Canada.
This CBG oil appears to be equivalent to the mellow oil I take in Canada, but it is available in the USA. It is a tincture, and is the same dosage per volume as the one I take.
When I take CBG before I go to sleep at night, in the morning when I wake up, the pressure plunges within the first 15 minutes by 7 mm Hg. This is in line with normal eyes. Before CBG my eye pressure would remain high for the entire morning and sometimes into the afternoon
I experienced, after about one month of using CBG, super clear vision, especially for far away objects and landscapes. I did not notice before, but I could now see almost every twig on the tree tops. I could no longer tolerate any dust or dirt on my glasses (whereas before I would walk around with very dirty glasses and wouldn't notice. On a clear day I can see tiny cars and busses miles down the road. Every light, every reflection of the windows on each car. It literally made my eyes super clear. like looking at extremely high definition TV.
I have been on CBG oil for a year now. I have experienced ZERO side effects. The only side effect I experienced was when I took too much CBG when I was trying to figure out my dosage. When I took too much my eyes would cross a bit and it would be difficult to see my laptop screen.
After we had our son 10 years ago, I could somehow live and function off 3-4 hours sleep per night. I somehow learned to live with less sleep (which was probably not good for my health). After taking CBG, I would fall asleep faster at night, and if I woke up without getting 7-8 hours I would feel absolutely terrible, like in my younger years. It normalized my sleeping habits.
Not only does CBG help my IOP, bringing by eye pressure average down to normal range, it also helped to bring down my blood pressure. My blood pressure was 145/95 before taking CBG. Now, my blood pressure is 118-130/80.
Seeing how CBG benefited me, I convinced my 80 year old (blind) mom to try it. While obviously CBG couldn't help her vision, perhaps it could help her swollen foot. After my dad died, her blood pressure would vary from 90/40 to 170/90 on a daily basis. This was not good. The doctor couldn't find any reason why her foot was swollen. It looked like a balloon and none of her socks or shoes would fit. After I gave her CBG, she noticed better sleep, her blood pressure varied less (more often within 110/70 +/- 20 pts. and her foot looks almost normal! Clearly there are some anti-inflammatory properties of CBG.
We have a beloved dog who has been suffering from hip dysplasia and leg shaking. He's been falling down the stairs a lot and lethargic. I started giving him one drop of CBG oil and he licks it off a spoon. With the CBG there is less shaking and he seems more alert.
My aunt had trouble sleeping so I gave her a bottle so she could try it. She now says she sleeps much better. No side effects reported.
I have found that, through my experience, CBG brings the body's system back into balance. Whatever is out of balance, CBG brings things back into balance. Blood pressure, eye pressure, swelling body parts. It appears to enhance the balance of your entire body's regulation system.
